Generators perfect for camping and tailgating

As the frequency of extreme weather events rises, portable generators have become increasingly common. Anyone who lives in a suburban area that regularly has power outages during storms will be familiar with the sound of dozens of generators humming throughout the neighborhood.

However, they have many other applications besides just providing backup power in an emergency. Anywhere an extension cord can't be utilized is where you'll find the best usage for a portable generator, including construction sites, tailgating and camping, barbecues, and events. As their costs have gone down, more and more people are able to keep a portable generator on hand.

In the event of a power outage at my house, a generator with a 3600W output would be sufficient to power the essentials, and they are a great size for my camping adventures, and tailgating fun.

However, you should first determine your own power needs before making a purchase.

Size Your Generator Properly

Knowing how much load a generator will be taking on is crucial for choosing the right size. Manufacturers typically specify both the starting watts and the running watts for their generators.

The first power surge required to turn on appliances or machinery with powerful electric motors or compressors is counted as part of the starting watts used. These devices have a much lower energy footprint when they are running for longer.

Several online calculators produce tables with ballpark values for frequently used items and appliances to aid in determining the necessary amount of available power. Totaling the energy consumption of numerous devices is another method of determining the sum. Multiply the voltage of the appliance, usually 120 volts, by the current it draws in amps (watts).

Whatever size you think you need, add 10% as a buffer.

Understanding Portable Power Generators

Before rushing out to get a portable generator, it's important to think about where and how you'll utilize it. Depending on the setting, there may be regulations or restrictions on their use at home, when camping, or on a construction site. If you follow the instructions, generators are very safe. To use it improperly could raise the risk of fire, electrocution, or carbon monoxide poisoning, and damage to the generator or its connections.

Types of Generators

Standard

These generators, sometimes known as backup generators, are used to provide electricity when and where it is temporarily needed. The term portable is subjective, as some items are more easily transported than others. Some of the smaller models can be picked up and carried, but the vast majority have wheels and a handle for portability. They weigh more than 100 pounds, therefore it may take two people to lift, load, and transport them. Appliances, power tools, and other electronics can be plugged straight into the generator's front panel standard outlets. In addition, a manual transfer switch and a twist-lock socket are included in some models to power household appliances.

Inverter

Even while inverter generators are portable like their non-inverter counterparts, we classify them as a separate subset due to their fundamentally different modes of operation. Like other generators, inverter generators provide 120/240 volts of AC power. Their output is AC like the others, however it is inverted to generate DC (Direct Current). The inversion and transformation are managed by a filtering circuit that modifies and cleans up the electrical current's sine wave.

Typical generators introduce various degrees of distortion into the alternating current sine wave. Most electrical gadgets don't have a problem with current distortion or surges, with the exception of sensitive electronics like tablets, laptops, televisions, and other smart devices. These devices have a longer expected lifespan if they are supplied with clean power and a stable voltage. Due to their increased complexity, inverter generators can be significantly more expensive.

Standby

A home's standby generator is hardwired into the building's electrical system. During a blackout, this might power the entire home or just the most important systems. Standby generators have built-in monitoring systems that keep tabs on the utility's power supply and immediately switch on if there's an outage.

Generator Safety

Never run a generator or other fuel-powered equipment in a closed garage or shed. Exhaust emissions include carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless gas that can poison and kill people. Manufacturers typically produce versions that turn off when they detect an increase in carbon monoxide gas and hence cannot be used in closed environments. Carbon monoxide can sneak into a home even if the garage door is open, so it's best not to run a generator there or anywhere near it. Therefore, generators should be used away from the home, preferably at least 20 feet away, with the exhaust pointing away from the house.

Best 3600 Watt Generators

Some of the best 3600W generators I've used are as follows:

Because it is an inverter, the power output of this generator is slightly lower than that of a conventional generator.

The Generac iQ3500's fuel tank can hold up to 2.6 gallons of gas. At a quarter load, it can run for up to 14.1 hours on a single tank of gas, while at a half load, it can run for up to 8.9 hours. It gets far on a single 2.6-gallon tank and has a low fuel consumption rate.

This portable generator has a 47 dB decibel output. Two people can have a normal discussion with this much background noise. This generator's noise output was minimized by the use of cutting-edge inverter technology and careful attention to the design of its enclosure.

This generator can be started both electrically and manually through recoil in the event of an emergency. Choke, run, and off are the three modes it can be set to.

The Generac iQ3500 features two 120V 20A 5-20R Duplex outlets, one 120V 30A L5-30R Twist Lock outlet, and two USB ports. Charging electronic devices like smartphones, cameras, etc., via a USB port is convenient. This is a parallel-capable generator. You may receive twice the output power from a pair of Generac iQ3500 inverter generators by connecting them in parallel with a parallel kit.

This generator also utilizes cutting-edge PowerRush technology. You can get twice as much done in half the time if you have a greater base capacity to work with. The Generac iQ3500 features an intuitive digital smart LCD control panel. A digital watts meter, remaining runtime display, generator status display, hour meter, and fuel level display are all included.

The Generac 7127 iQ3500 generator follows all standards set by the EPA and CARB.

This generator utilizes inverter technology to provide clean electricity. The total harmonic distortion (THD) is extremely low, coming in at under 3%. Power that hasn't been tainted by contaminants is ideal for sensitive electronics.

It has a low oil shut-off sensor, automatic voltage regulation, and metal handles. This generator isn't the lightest on this list, but it's still easily transportable. Having no wheels doesn't limit how easily you can move things around.

The investment in this generator is a good one for home and office use. Cleaner electricity is produced, and there is less noise.
