The transfer switch is a great way to run a generator through your house. Where the electrical panel usually houses this type of circuit breaker.

On the other hand, this article will teach you how to hook up a generator to your home without using a transfer switch.

In order to keep the food fresh and the lights on, you may have to resort to some creative methods. As long as these "shortcuts" are executed properly, there is no problem with them.

This is the most convenient way for me to link my generator to my home.

Tools required

You'll likely need the following tools and materials:

  1. Use a round connection with three prongs and wire to connect the power intake box to the portable generator.
  2. A power consumption watt tester is what you need to determine how much energy your portable generator actually generates.
  3. A longer power wire for the generator's inside outlet.
  4. The use of a hand drill is recommended for making a hole in a wall.
  5. Oscillating tools for cutting sheetrock.
  6. A Phillips screwdriver is used to secure the plug.
  7. Wear protective gear since you will be working with power tools.
  8. Waterproof metal enclosure for the line.
  9. Sealant for making a permanent, leak-proof installation.
  10. And an actual generator!

If you must use an older extension cord rather than a new one, check that the plugs at both ends are in good working order.

The line connecting your generator should be at least 25 feet in length. You can use as much as you like while hooking up the generator, but you'll also need a sizable, watertight container.

What generator do I use for this? 

I use a 3500 watt generator to 30 amp breakers and a 120 volt outlet. The fact that it's only a backup in case the power goes out means that you don't need something very powerful. You may want to use a more robust generator, but first you need to upgrade the wiring connecting it to the power source.

Additionally, a larger, higher voltage generator requires a more sophisticated solution, which might mean you have to revert to a transfer switch after all.

Step 1 - Where do you want to install the outlet utility box

Make room for the generator plug wherever you like. For this, you'll need to use your oscillating tool for wood and drywall to make a rectangular hole in the wall large enough to fit your outlet. If your wall is built of concrete or cement, you can use your drill as well.

Step 2 - Get drilling for your cable 

Use the drill to make a hole in the wall so that the cables may be threaded through it and out the exterior of the house. Make sure it's bigger than the wires' expected diameter. You can prevent any damage to your electrical wires by routing them within your outlet box in this fashion.

Step 3 - Set up your waterproof box
